The CD comes with a lavish booklet featuring a wealth of period photographs and illustrations, an in-depth essay and detailed track-by-track notes based on an exclusive interview with Sedaka, whose story is told in a stage musical set to open soon in London's West End. The track list spans the years 1956 to 1971. Of the 25 tracks, 17 are Sedaka/Greenfield compositions, the remainder representing their work with other collaborators, each of whom are also the subjects of mini-biogs in the booklet.

Joyful Pop Music
"Where the Boys Are, the Songs of Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield" is a delightful disc that highlights this amazing songwriting team. Connie Francis' 1958 hit "Stupid Cupid" opens the set with its bubbly sass. Her gorgeous soaring ballad that titles this set is lush and lovely. Listening to Carole King on "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" from 1963 is a delightful blast from the past. The Cookies' "Foolish Little Girl" still pops with attitude. I've heard Neil's version of "Calendar Girl," but Dee Dee Sharp's "Calendar Boy" recorded for her 1963 album "Down Memory Lane" bubbles and pops delightfully. Howard Greenfield wrote "Crying in the Rain" with Carole King; the Everly Brothers' version reached #6 on the charts in 1962. LaVern Baker's 1959 "I Waited Too Long" aches like a classic torch song. Peggy Lee sings the theme song from the famous 60s sit-com "Bewitched" which is interesting to hear with the lyrics. Ben E. King released "Walking in the Footsteps of a Fool" as a B-side, but it a strong track with the rhythmic string arrangement. Patti Drew's recording of "Working On a Groovy Thing" charted in 1968 with her smoking sultry version a delight. The Globetrotters' "Rainy Day Bells" bounces soulfully. This disc is a joyful pop music history lesson that sounds great. Enjoy!

A major contributor to American popular culture.
An awesome collection of Sedaka and Greenfield songs performed by the artists that made them famous. Great booklet with detailed descriptions of the genesis of the songs, anecdotes regarding Sedaka’s interaction with songwriters, lyricists, touring etc. What strikes me is Sedaka’s nonchalance regarding the impact his and Greenfield’s music had upon the popular culture of America. I receive Neil’s mini concerts on Facebook, great live stuff from Neil, and he still is a magnificent performer.

Pop premium

"Where The Boys Are" - The Music of Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield
The UK's leading reissue label Ace Records has added a final (?) volume to its highly successful series featuring hits, small and big, from the pens of renowned Brill Building tunesmiths such as Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil, Jeff Barry/Ellie Greenwich, Burt Bacharach/Hal David, Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller et al. This CD comprises songs written by Neil Sedaka and long-standing lyricist partner, the late Howard Greenfield. The selection is more than good, but big hits such as The Captain & Tennille's world smashes "Love Will Keep Us Together", an American chart topper in 1975 and "Lonely Night (Angel Face)", which cracked the US Top 3 a year later, have sadly, been omitted. A few tracks showcase just lyricist Greenfield, and are, alas, rather obscure and uninteresting, the only exception being The Everly Brothers' beautiful ballad "Crying In The Rain". Some of the team's songs appear strangely enough in mono although these should be available in stereo: Nancy Wilson's "Don't Look Over Your Shoulder" (1967) and Ben E. King's "Walking In The Footsteps of A Fool" (1962), but neither song has the hallmarks of a Sedaka/Greenfield hit: catchy and easily memorable melody. And this goes for quite a few songs on this CD. There are, however, many highlights: Peggy Lee's "Bewitched" and the delightful 1958 Connie Francis rocker "Stupid Cupid". Also included (and rightfully so) is The Tokens' (of whom Sedaka was once a member!) "While I Dream". As always, Ace has painstakingly dug up detailed information on each and every track which is bound to please any serious record collector, but far too many of the songs selected for this CD are in my opinion not the pair's best work. Hence, this set does not fully celebrate the great songwriting of Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield.
