Disappointing for non-beginners and too expensive - Won't help you make Amelia-quality Viz
While Amelia does a great job of leading beginners through the various topics of D3, those who are already experienced with D3 and good coding practices, may find it too basic with little advanced material coverage.I was hoping to learn how to do the things she does on her website, but alas, even after 600+ pages, we don't get even close to the complex work she has done.I do think the book is a bit overpriced, and would imagine that this is because it has big print and has a lot of repetitive diagrams that show one step at a time. This is a feature some will like since it makes for easy and light reading, but it makes the book so much longer than it otherwise would be... I wish there was less incremental diagrams and more complex instruction.Other challenges: it is graphically flawed from a page design perspective, has no index or chapter numbers.I guess I'm hoping for a more reasonably priced Volume 2 at some point where we actually learn how to make the stuff she does on her website. I get the sense that this is 5% of what she knows and I wish she went into more depth with how to make her own visualizations.

Great Content
This book is packed with good examples and walk throughs. I am very happy with the content of the book. However, the actually quality of the book itself is lacking. The binding, paper and print are all pretty low quality. I've barely read the book and the binding is already falling apart. The pages look like they were printed on a regular ol' inkjet. I feel weird complaining about this, but the text and images are a really lacking contrast which makes some of the visuals almost imperceptible. Additionally there is no index. This makes it really difficult to pinpoint information about specific topics. I've never bought a technical book with no index. It would great if the publishers gave you access to a digital copy to make up for the lack of an index.

Needs updated, alternative example code source
Started at the beginning, making a line chart with data. Encountered first problem: they want to email you the example source code. If you have outlook, security settings block this. So, never could download source code. Why it’s not on GitHub is beyond me. Then, the second problem: The first chapter uses the darksky API which is no longer functioning. Can’t even get the same data. Awfully expensive book to run into two major problems within the first 3 minutes of opening. I’m sure the D3 content is good, but you gotta get the basics right for people paying this much.

Great end to end book for D3
This is probably the best book on the market for D3. Amanda was able to build upon each chapter and show how you can build a simple bar chart/line chart using the foundations of D3. Additionally, the book does not rush or skip over how to get datasets into D3 for visualization so that you can use your own custom data when going through the tutorials. Highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get more control of their visualizations especially when showcasing them on the web.

The book I wish I had when I was learning d3
Amelia is an excellent teacher as demonstrated by the content and organization of this book. She breaks down the fundamentals into easily understandable pieces, and then explains how to combine and build on those building blocks to create unique, advanced data visualizations. This is the book I wish I had when I was learning d3, and I've raved about it so much that half of my team has since purchased the book and used it to get started learning. Could not recommend it more!

A must have if you use JS frameworks
Great book. It can be pricei if you are used to mass-produced books, but it's the best I've found on the topic. The author is very responsible about questions and concerns too. She answered my concerns before and even after my purchase.I particularly loved they React chapter. If you Google how to integrate d3 with React you'll find 5 or more different approaches and it can be very confusing to pick one approach without solid guidance.

Essential for grapsing D3 faster
D3 is one of the most difficult to learn and fine-grained JavaScript libraries out there, but this covers it in an exhaustive and digestible manner that will help you "think" in D3 more effectively and be able to take the right approach. Yes, it is expensive, as are most of the other books in the Fullstack.io.Newline series, but the quality is exceedingly high. If you need to learn D3 and learn it well, this is a worthwhile peurchase.
