Well built, Sounds bad
This is a solidly constructed microphone. It feels as good as a Shure SM58 and it's contemporaries.Unfortunately, it sounds nothing like one. The sound really leaves a lot to be desired. Compared to similar professional microphones the sound is thin like an AM radio, completely lacks bass, and is unacceptably prone to plosives. There's barely any windscreen foam inside of the grill at all - It's problematic because any breath noise makes the microphone sound like it's clipping/distorting. It reminds me of a cheap gaming headset.Using a foam windscreen on the outside of the microphone does solve this issue, however the weak/thin sound compared to microphones such as Shure and Sennheiser make it hard to recommend. It sounds like a toy with zero depth/warmth while sitting at a reduced volume.Aesthetically it's perfect, however. I love the look of this thing. It's awesome. Functionally... why? Why couldn't they put a quality capsule in here and slightly more foam? Considering the price is comparable to other workhorse microphones there's no excuse to cheap out. So close...

A whole new level of sound
I've been around the block a few times and I always come back to mxl for warm vocals. When I checked this out for my wife, ines a little concerned with some of the finer peaks and valleys on the tonal response. In my opinion that means either someone tuned it with ungodly expertise, or they want it to look that way. My wife has known nothing but sm58s , e100s and xm8500s. She used this once and fell in love. As her sound tech, so did I. MXL proved once again they know their sound to a god like degree. The vocals are warm, and clear. As for build quality, this thing is a damned tank. You can tell from the moment you pick it up, its solid, but not overly heavy. Just heavy enough to let you know its built to last. Couple this thing with an xlive u3 rig...I would take it over a sennheiser believe it or not. Feedback rejection is exceptional. From the perspective of a vocalist it sounds, crisp, clean and warm. From the engineering perspective it works, and works well. It is a refined piece of equipment that is a dream to work with. The bright colors made me think it was more flash than substance, and I have never been happier to be so wrong. Make no mistake, MXL does not do anything half way. Its quality, or nothing.

It really cuts off background noise!
My neighbors were legit blasting their music while I was recording and you couldn't hear it all (Make sure you aim your mic properly always!) I haven't noticed any possible distortions in my voice and it's been working great so far, just get a good audio interface or mixer for it and you should be fine!
