Functional, But Crude
I bought this to grind roasted cacao nibs into chocolate liquor as part of the process to make chocolate. Small scale chocolate makers such as I often use peanut butter machines for this purpose because nibs and roasted peanuts are similar in the way they grind and chocolate liquor is similar in consistency to peanut butter. This machine worked. Once it got started I was able to process about 30 lb of nibs in under 1 hour. The claim in the listing that it will produce 15 kg/hour appears to be accurate. But what a mess. The top of the grinding chamber has six holes, each measuring 5/8" diameter. The grinding process caused bits of the nibs and paste to be flung through the holes. Fortunately I was doing this on a lanai and could hose down the deck when finished. The only way I would suggest this to be used indoors would be if you first cover all surfaces within ten feet of the machine with a plastic drop cloth. And be prepared to have your clothing, face, arms, hair, etc. peppered with the spray. And then there is the cleanup after using the machine. The grinding disk is mounted on a rotating base with bolts and blades protruding. The grinding chamber lid is held to the body of the machine with latched attached with screws that protrude into the grinding chamber. The result of all this hardware inside the grinding chamber is that it is extremely difficult to clean after use.The machine needs to be cleaned before the first use. It arrived with the grinding chamber covered with residue of the machining process -- oil and grit. Lightly rubbing the inside of the grinding chamber when it first came out of the box resulted in fingers being turned black. Wiping with paper towels turned the towels black, but did not remove much of the oil and grit. Water and detergent is not to be used to clean the machine, probably because the motor is not sealed against water. Wiping down with paper towels soaked in vegetable oil could reduce the industrial oil and grit, but because of the bolts, blades, and other crude hardware it would be impossible to wipe down all surfaces. I ran chaff from winnowing the cacao through the machine as a way to clean the areas I could not reach. One more thing -- there is no on/off switch. You plug it in and it starts running and keeps going until unplugged. It can be tricky to adjust the spacing of the grind disks, and the machine can bog down and the motor can stop turning until it is powered off or the distance between grind disks is increased. I found myself several times lunging for the outlet to unplug it.Okay, there is one more thing yet -- there is no safety interlock to prevent the machine from running while the top of the grinding chamber is removed for cleaning. If for any reason the machine became powered while you are attempting to clean the grinding chamber you could find your fingers minced by the whirling bolts and blades. The identical machine appears in numerous listings. It served my purpose, but I plan to replace it with a different design of machine and not use it again. I considered returning it, and having found it so oily and gritty on delivery would have done so without using it, but since I urgently needed to complete my immediate project I decided that instead I would offer it for sale as used equipment. If you would be using it so frequently that it did not need to be cleaned between uses, and could cope with the debris ejected through those six holes, it might be a good choice for you. Otherwise, my only recommendation is to avoid this design.
