This book does assume that the reader has at-least some background in quantum mechanics. Using that knowledge, this book clearly covers may topic associated with nuclear physics. Review: Very good textbook, used by many Universities. One of the few books where Particle and Nuclear Physics are elegantly treated together in a comprehensive way. Updated with the new concepts like Higgs Boson and some interesting reference to Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Medicine.

This book is a useful combination of nuclear and particle physics and aimed at 3rd year undergraduates. The good : chapters on nuclear physics are clear and well-explained in terms of physical principles. Each chapter has a set of problems that aid understanding and solutions are available online (of course you have to be disciplined and try to solve them yourself first!). Not-so-good : in particle physics, the basic concepts are not explained well (an example being isospin, which is bizarrely pushed to an appendix even though most of the third chapter depends on it), and the chapters are poorly structured : more examples on the basics would be better for an undergrad text than, say, an extended discussion on exotic baryon states. Poor editorial control means third edition material feels 'tacked on' rather than integrated, and there is an unacceptable number of (obvious) typos in formulae. However you will probably be OK with this book if you have good lectures. But you may also want to look at Particle Physics in the LHC Era (Oxford) before selecting it.
