Fantastic information & easy to read!
This book is absolutely fantastic! It had so much helpful information, not only on how to build different dock types but also a ton of helpful tips and tricks along the way. The best part is how easy it is to read, understand, and apply the content. This book was a lifesaver in both confirming what (I thought) I knew about building a dock and also was essential in planning for materials and the building process. I can't recommend this book enough!

If you don't know how to build a dock but want to, or aren't sure what kind of dock you should get.
I'm a handy person that can build a garage, but was overwhelmed with different ways to build docks based on different environments. This book was perfect for me. It is comprehensive and provides multiple solutions for various dock building types and situations. It's detailed, but not overly so. It's over 200 pages, full of useful pictures, plans, and information. It's written in a very relaxed, matter of fact style, with a bit of silly platitude thrown in (without being too annoying). If you are thinking of building a dock, or having someone build you one, I would highly recommend this book.

NEED TO BUILD OR MAINTAIN A DOCK? THIS IS FOR YOU.
Have built or maintained docks in an ocean environment now for 30+ year. Wish I had had this reference from the beginning. Would haves saved time, money and worry over the years. I really like the thoroughness and detail of the illustrations in the reference. Though it is for the Do It Yourselfer, a professional can glean a lot of good info from this book. Heavier installations just need to size up the drawings provided. I tried to think of things it didn't cover and I really couldn't think of an instance that it doesn't address. Over the years, I have read plenty of professional articles in the marina industry publications and they didn't begin to clearly examine half the situations addressed by this reference. This a book that belongs on the shelf of anyone dealing with dock maintenance or building on a small or large scale.

The "gold standard" for those considering buying or installing docks.
This comprehensive, definitive book on docks is a must-have volume for anyone considering the purchase, installation, or maintenance of docks. Sam Merriam, who is in my mind, the guru of docks, tells the reader, clearly what to do and importantly, what NOT to do. This well-illustrated book is full of comprehensive, essential information covering docks from A to Z. I consider this to be the dock "bible."jp - Engineer

Limited value for real dock construction
While this maybe helpful for lightweight (author’s choice of words) docks, for anything substantial it seemed a little lightweight itself. There is no discussion about FRP pilings, which clearly changes the game about pilings, nor even about jetting in pilings. Not a good source for current state of art.

Masterful.
Building Your Own Dock is a comprehensive examination of the techniques and tools to build many different styles of docks. As a teacher, I appreciated the clear prose and precise diagrams. Lovely pictures of Maine and a hint of downeast humor make this both a wonderful resource and a giggle to read.
