brilliant Maigret. And of course
You hear the name Rowan Atkinson and you think of Mr. Bean or Black Adder or Johnny English. I read all the Simenon mysteries 'back in the day', so I was astounded to think Rowan Atkinson was going to play the laid back, brilliant Maigret. And of course, this I gotta see. Well, like David Suchet in Poirot, I think Atkinson will become the definitive actor for this character. I have watched the first and second series and my husband who usually does not like what I like is also hooked. Michael Gambon was a good Maigret and I have his series. And the French actor Jean Gabin, is excellent even if I don't speak French and can only find two movies. But Atkinson is brilliant, even if he's just sitting in a chair smoking his pipe and thinking. You understand the loyalty of his staff, the love his wife has for him. It's believable that he understands human nature so well and that he has true compassion for all the 'low-lifes' that stumble into his path. As always the British get the period right - the costumes, the cars, the parts of a 'Paris' that are not mentioned in the songs that Hollywood sings about the city. Simenon's plots were always complicated, filled with the duplicity of human nature. 'Sets a trap'' is always done and I have three versions of it and it started the first series off perfectly. The second series has 'Crossroads' which I have always found a confusing tale, and 'Montmartre' which is a cautionary tale about the corruption that comes from greed and drugs and the innocents that get caught up in that net. Very French or maybe just very human. For a British take on a French author, they obviously understand Simenon. I hope there are many more of these to watch.

Maigret Season 2: One so-so, the other very good.
"Night at the Crossroads" (2 stars only) was slightly disappointing after the excellence of the fist two films, but "Maigret in Montmartre" (4 stars)returned to the quality and finished the series on a high note. Good stories, well told, with excellent casts. Rowan Atkinson emerged as a fine, and distinctive Maigret. Wish there could be more.

A Delight
These versions of two of Simenon's stories have made me start buying his books again. It is really sad that the series have stopped. I enjoyed every minute of season 1 & 2.
