The Outsiders - Teacher Guide by Novel Units

THE OUTSIDERS is now required reading in most middle and high schools, and I bought this study guide, so I could use some of the ideas in my teaching. I am using the questions currently as I am tutoring the book on a one-to-one basis with the student. I notice that some of the questions are better than the ones that I thought up, and I am revising the list of questions to include some of these in my own study guides.The only criticism I have to offer is the vocabulary. Some chapters do not have an adequate list of vocabulary words for young students to study. Sometimes, I find the words are short by three or seven. I demand my students learn ten vocabulary words a week so maybe I'm a stickler for that--yet, the more the words learned, the better for vocabulary enrichment.

An excellent teaching tool that covered a variety of activities. These activities were fun for my students. They helped my students to really understand and enjoy the book. They did not want to put the book down. I used the writing prompts in a different way. The best prompts written were voted on by a group of their peers . All prompts received prizes. Students worked very had to receive high level prizes. They voted on the prompts each week. I found that the students that received lower level prizes really worked harder to acquire higher level prizes. I chose to give allstudents prizes. This was also a motivational tool for them to strive for the best..

While this guide DOES have some useful activities and graphic organizers, it certainly isn't a comprehensive guide--more of a resource to support your unit. I was disappointed that the vocabulary lists were pretty minimal and there weren't chapter/unit quizzes. This isn't what I was looking for; however, once I build my own unit, I will probably use a couple of the critical thinking activities. On the plus side, I paid less than $6.

This book is a very good supplementary teaching tool to use because it coincides with my lessons and activities I've created to go along with this.

It has good information, however for the cognitive level of students I teach the material content is cognitively too high.

It has some nice activities to teach the book with.

Add additional assignments to increase rigor. Interesting information.
