Q: can this easel hold the white board in landscape format (horizontal)?

The whiteboard cannot hold in landscape format, as the tripod behind the board is fixed

Q: Can the flipchart pad be replaced? Will any brand of correct size work?

Yes, the paper part can be replaced with a new one. There is a bar across the top that lifts up and there are hooks for a paper flipchart. The white board part is attached to the leg supports.

Q: is this sturdy enough for a elementary classroom?

I think so, if no one is touching it, as in bumping or walking by. The hook that connects the front two legs to the back leg, isn’t secure. It’s just a little hole that you slide the pin into. So when you move it, it is easy for the pin to come out. It wish it was like a clasp or latch that required a little more effort for it to come undone.
