New Grounds: The Manual for Non-Toxic Etching

The best print manual that I own.
New Grounds: The Manual for Non-Toxic Etching (2nd edition, in my case) is by far the best manual that I have for printing. Hands down. Period. What makes this slim manual so good? First of all, it takes a cook-book approach to explaining how to do things—step 1, do this…step 2, do that. Perhaps some people do not need this sort of hand-holding, but the reason why this is such a great feature is that it becomes a checklist, and checklists are critical elements when trouble shooting issues when something goes wrong. Did I…soak the paper long enough? use exhausted etchant? use too little pressure on the press? In addition to going over the basics, this book also uses the same cook-book style for both more esoteric processes (multiple plates, spit bites, sugar lifts) as well as the hum-drum stuff that even a google search yields conflicting information (such as curating one's prints). In short, this is the end-all, be-all guide for running your personal print studio. It is the most invaluable source that I (now) have regarding many different aspects of intaglio printing. Thanks for writing this book!

Highly recommended source book for earth and human friendly print./etch./etc.
This book is a great source for those wanting to work with safer chemicals for their own health and that of the environment. I will definitely keep this as a source reference in my studio. So appreciative that someone put these methods into one book. Methods are shared from experts in their field...and they are skilled in sharing their knowledge. Highly recommended.

Thank you New Grounds for a GREAT nontoxic Manual!
Great nontoxic printmaking manual! Thank you so much to the authors for putting together a comprehensive, thorough and easy to understand and follow manual! Lots of good info all written in clear and concise way - I would love to use this as a course manual, as I teach nontoxic printmaking at a university. I put together my own manual but this is much better, and up to date, mostly. Love Keith Howard and all he has taught us and developed but this book is easier for students to understand and follow. Thanks again to New Grounds!

A perfect guidebook for Printmakers
Non Toxic Etching is a relatively new development in the centuries old medium of etching. This book by Regina Held and Ray Maseman is informative, well written, well illustrated and affordable. In concise language and clear methods the book guides printmakers through step by step techniques to make a variety of intaglio etchings. The tone of the book is perfect-it is concise, free from verbiage and jargon and has an encouraging tone. All aspects of etching-from plate preparation, etching plates, inking plates, pulling prints on a press and numbering prints are in this book. The final chapter has great advice on how to store and catalog prints. The glossary is detailed and helpful. A comprehensive index is included and is a handy way to access material in the book.Written by accomplished printmakers who are also teachers-this book contains a wealth of information, ideas and techniques. It is a book that makes non toxic etching approachable, understanding and possible.

Very well written and presented
This is an excellent introduction to safe printing techniques written by an international expert. As someone engaged in printmaking for nearly 20 years I found it extremely helpful. A bit pricey though.
