Great filter, just not quite 10 stops... And real gutted about the case
Its beautifully made however it did not come in the same case that I saw in the online reviews there it is set in a foam cut out with two hollowed areas where your fingers go in to when removing it from the case. It just came in a crappy soft plastic case sitting on top of a layer of foam, some what disappointing after what I saw in the reviews. I have a B+W xs-pro variable ND filter that came in a similar crappy case, I really wish these "premium" filters came in proper "premium" cases. At least the breakthrough case stays shut, the B+W one pops open real easy and that's not ideal for a case protecting expensive glass...Onto the performance side of things. The filter I received isn't exactly 10 stops, from early testing it was able to reduce my shutter speed around 800x, definitely over exposed when I reduced my shutter speed by 1000x (compared to the control image), so its more like 9 1/2 - 9 2/3 stops. If I started with 1/2000 of a second I can reduced that to 0.4s not 0.5s as it mathematically should, not much difference between 0.4 and 0.5 but If I wanted to take a 500s exposure but was only able to go to 400s then that would make a huge difference, and the difference will become more significant as the desired exposure goes up.For now it will do the job I bought it for, but I wonder if the "25 year ironclad guarantee" will still hold if I decided to call them up, after 24 years of using it, I want to return it because I had suddenly realised without that extra 1/2-1/3 stop of density its just not good enough lol...More than likely there is some small print somewhere that states the actual density will fall between x and X and that 1/2-1/3 stop density is within the margin of error and therefore not covered.Putting aside the filter being slightly lighter than 10 stops, the image quality is top notch with really very very little colour casting that I can see...Would give it a 5 start but I'm just really bummed (more than I should be) about the case not being like the ones I saw in other online reviews...

Holy crap, Breakthrough Photography is seriously impressive...
Hi Graham.I ordered your X4 10-Stop ND filter a little while back and I just wanted to let you know that it's been an absolute revelation for me. Up until now, I've been a strict B+W user for my filters (I tend to be a pretty intense brand loyalist once I find one I like.) but when decided to experiment with long exposure photography, I purchased the B+W XS Pro Multicolored 10-Stop ND and I was just horribly disappointed by the severe color cast on my images to the extent that I just had to return it and I questioned my decision to experiment with long exposure photography altogether.I had never even heard of Breakthrough Photography before, but some of the stuff I read about your products looked promising so I decided to take a plunge. Suffice it to say that I have been massively impressed by the quality of the X4 10-Stop filter across the board, not only in the quality of the image, but across the entire build of the product. I've just ordered an X4 6-Stop, a 52-77mm step up ring, and once I have the money I will be ordering the X4 3-Stop to complete the set and a Circular Polarizer to replace my B+W CPL as well. The absolutely insane part about all this is that your stuff not only blows the competition out of the water, but pretty much does it at the same freaking price!I know that most emails tend to be people complaining about stuff so I just wanted to send this to let you know how much I appreciate your company's products and the clear commitment to quality and innovation. Over time, I'm even planning to replace all of my B+W protective filters with Breakthrough Photography replacements as well. It's just really great to have found a company that I feel that I can really trust to bring not compromise, quality products to the market at competitive prices. You've got yourself a loyal brand convert and I hope to see even more amazing products in the future. Now please release a filter pouch so I can keep my filers in branded swag instead of this third party branded stuff. :DIn short, please keep up the awesome work!

Breakthrought Photography 82mm X4 ND 10-stop, MRC16
Everyone seems to talk about the color-casting issue. Sure it is important and this filter is almost hitting the neutral point compared to no filter at all on your lens. However, everyone seems to forget the other 2 important things, and to me more important than the color-cast issue: vignette and ability to stack filters. The reason why I said color-cast is important but not as the other 2 because you can correct most of the color-cast now a day without too much efforts with the current available software. However, when you have a thick filter and then you need to stack a polarizer or another ND on top, and most of the times you usually use these ND filters with wide angle lenses for landscape shots, you'd more than likely to see vignettes on all corners of your raw images that no amount of post-processing correction that can fix it. Sure you can buy other cheaper filters that might have more color-cast, but the vignette and the usability of it (like putting on the filter and especially when removing it), would render some of your raw files useless. This filter's design and usability is almost perfect, at this point, I would say is the best filter you can buy. Sure, it is expensive, but look up the B+W 82mm MRC 10-stop and you'll see that this is not the most expensive yet, and the B+W doesn't have a neutral color as good as this one. They both have Schott glass and brass ring. Now, the 25 year warranty I"m not sure about, I'm not sure if the company will be around that long, and don't get me wrong, but I hope that they'll be around forever since they're making quality and fantastic products that are worth my hard-earned money. I'm rating this 5 stars! One note, even though the title of this product says X3, but I actually got the X4 as of Aug 27, 2016 from Amazon, and according to Breakthrough, they have already shipped Amazon the X4, even though as they told me, X3 and X4 are the same, just different names.

excellent quality
Already have 72mm 6 an 10 stop by BREAKTHROUGH but new lens required 82mm.Less hassle than Lee holder and no colour cast.

the most colour accurate ND filters i've had
I used to get Hoya's ND filter cause they're a little bit cheaper, then I found this one which is more expensive but the build quality as well as the quality of the filter is just too perfect...not only the colours are accurate the build quality, the packaging is just really nice....definitely a solid buy...I was a bit hesitant to buy this at first cause its a bit expensive but it was worth the money as the quality is just as premium as the price 10/10

Filtro de calidad excepcional
No cambia los colores. No degrada la nitidez. No he detectado ningún efecto indeseable en la imagen.
