Before Jennifer Garner there was Bridget Fonda
Before Jennifer Garner’s “Alias” became a household name, there was Bridget Fonda’s Action/Thriller “Point of No Return.” Based on the French film “Nikita” by director Luc Besson in 1990, this 1993 Warner Bros. remake stars Hollywood royalty Bridget Fonda (Doc Hollywood) in a dark, stylish and romantic action/drama that takes place in Washington D.C. where we meet the film’s protagonist “Maggie,” (Fonda), a lost soul running with a tough inner-city gang. Suddenly, one night in a convenience store her life changes forever. During a violent shootout with police after breaking into a pharmacy, a drug-addicted Maggie fatally shoots an officer. Instantly captured and put on Death Row, unbeknownst to this female anti-hero, she is being evaluated by a shadowy government agent “Bob” played by Gabriel Byrne (Into the West) who saves Maggie from the death chamber by faking her death. When Maggie awakens from what she thought was certain death, she is shocked and furious to discover that she has been recruited as a government assassin against her will. Maggie is out of time and out of options, her only choice, to play along with the twisted Cat and Mouse Game or die. Under the watchful eye of her handler Bob and a kind surrogate mother figure “Amanda” played by Anne Bancroft (The Graduate), Maggie is transformed into a superbly-trained and dangerously beautiful government assassin. Tasked with a number of covert assignments, Maggie operates under the code name “Nina” after her favorite singer, Nina Simone. Working under unofficial cover as a computer expert with the alias “Claudia,” Maggie travels to Los Angeles and takes up residence at Venice Beach where she meets a young, charming photographer “J.P.” played by Dermot Mulroney (Young Guns) who connects with her at the store and over dinner they fall madly in love. It is here that Maggie finds herself and desperately begins to seek a new life away from the lie that she’s living as a contract killer for Uncle Sam. I found this movie to be decent for a relatively unknown action thriller of the 90’s. 1993 was ruled by summer blockbusters like Jurassic Park, Free Willy and The Fugitive. However, “Point of No Return” makes for an entertaining spy thriller with a powerful female heroine, Bridget Fonda who is front and center in a role traditionally garnered by leading men. Bridget Fonda combines the femininity of Sandra Bullock in Speed and the tough-as-nails action star flare of Sigourney Weaver in Aliens. The film is Rated-R for language, violence and sex but I found most the sex scenes quite tame compared to the almost pornographic portrayals of today. 1993 was a more conservative time and if a film like this was released now, it would probably get a PG-13 rating. I would have like to have seen more interviews with the cast on the Special Features rather than limited Production Notes and a Trailer. Overall, it’s still a very good movie.

Not bad, but...
...Bridget Fonda comes nowhere close to Anne Parillaud's brilliant performance in the French original "Nikita". It retains the plot of the original, up to the final job, but it remains a glossy Hollywood remake of the gritty original. It's actually not that bad, but for people who don't like subtitles, it's worth viewing it first, and then following it with The Real Thing.

Great film in excellent condition
Difficult to choose between this movie and the original French version: Nikita … La Femme Nikita was a long-running television offshoot series. This is a great, action-packed movie with a splendid cast. The DVD was in perfect condition (as was the case).

Excellent
Bridget Fonda is every bit as good an actress as Jane, especially in thrillers such as this. Do not be put off with the 18 classification; there is violence, but by modern standards it should have a 15, not an 18.

Tough girl movie
Used to have this on video. So bought as a replacement on dvd. The transformation of Bridget's character is great. How she moves on from her previous life is portrayed very well. As it was obviously very hard. A very different enjoyable film.

A good remake
La Femme Nikita was already a cult movie so attempting a remake was a risk. They have pulled it off and this is certainly a classic that will still be watched for years to come.Having been left hanging in mid-air,.. when is someone going to finish this story,.. could they? If there was ever a sequel it would have to be pretty sharp to stay with the impact of the original film.
