In the epic tradition of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, THE GREAT RAID is an inspirational true story of the most triumphant rescue mission in U.S. military history! As World War II rages, the elite 6th Ranger Battalion is given a mission of heroic proportions: push 30 miles behind enemy lines and liberate over 500 American prisoners of war. Under the command of Lt. Col. Henry Mucci (Benjamin Bratt -- TRAFFIC), the men of the 6th will face the unthinkable by attempting the impossible! Also featuring James Franco (SPIDER-MAN 1 & 2), Connie Nielsen (GLADIATOR), and Joseph Fiennes (SHAKESPEAKE IN LOVE), this gripping big-screen hit captures a moment in time when men of honor became soldiers of destiny!

Excellent history based war movie. The historical background & context were well established, acting/charactorization were very good, photography was well used to set mood, the story was well told from the perspectives of both the prisoners and the Rangers, the climactic battle was exceptionally well done, and the production strayed far less than the Hollywood norm from the historical facts. The antagonists were dutifully villanous, again without straying from historical realities. Though, the producers have the Japanese to thank for that. The Bataan Death March, brutal occupation, and criminally heinous Japanese treatment of POWs were historical fact, not the product of a screen play writer's sadistic imagination. I appreciate the producers decision to ignore Hollywood's usual PC attempt to 'humanize' the Japanese soldiers by writing in empathetic charactors who, sadly, never existed. I also appreciate that the movie portrayed brutal exploitive Philipino criminals as well as selfless Philipino resistance members & couragous guerrillas. In all, a well told story of tragedy, hope, courage, and triumph. Exceptionally well done for the genre, I would recommend this movie to anyone not hopelessly lost in the fantasy world of pacifist ideology. The Great Raid

The Great Raid
The Great Raid is my favorite movie of all war movies. The one I use to love more then it, before I saw the great raid was Mid Way. Doesn't mean I disconnect the Mid Way movie. But both of them are 1 and 2 position for my war movies. It was the fact that someone went and actually got our guys out and did not leave them. It is so sad when your country forgets them that fought so hard for us. Great acting and actors. Each person that played a role was the person that should of been the man or women.

The Great Raid
Prisoners incarcerated by the Japanese forces are released with a daring attack on the compound which costs the invaders dearly. Great courage, a desire, and love for, freedom. Where was John Wayne when this movie was made. Isn't he supposed to live forever top make movies like this. While enjoyable this production doesn't even scratch the surface of what was a monumental event and those interested will need to read the full account to learn of what went into the attack. If nothing more the movie inspires us to look further. After all, you can't screen write an event like that into a relatively short movie and tell the whole story. Accept this as light touch on a big, important, event in the war in the Pacific

a forgotten gem
This is a great film for those who love genuine history... and this is a story that needed to be told !. So much of World War II seems to be slipping beyond our collective memory so this film serves not only to remind us of the ugly nature of war, but also the true heroism of those who served ( male and female). This is the true story of those American left behind when Japan conquered the Philippines, and those who risked their lives to assist and rescue American POW's destined to die otherwise.

High impact film!
This was ordered for a friend of mine whose father was a POW and lived through this historic event in time. The film was very real, even including some actual film footage from the archives. The storyline was strong with a visceral impact. My friend's father talked about these events and the places mentioned in the movie. The death march was horrific and this film has given a voice to those who never left the island alive. Great film, but hard to watch, if you understand what I mean. Real people, real events, really sad.
