Even Steven and Odd Todd, Level 3 (Hello Math Reader)

Perfect for Second Grade!
This was a suggested reading to align with Unit 1 of our Bridges curriculum for Second Grade. We have been learning about odd/even numbers for over 4 weeks, so my students had a solid understanding of odd/even numbers before we read this story. It’s a very engaging story with lots of opportunities to stop and talk about the story throughout. There are thought provoking questions at the end of the story that relate back to math concepts and story comprehension elements. Highly recommend!

Cute story for teaching odd and even numbers
I had no idea when I purchased this book what a hit it would be with my first grade students. I just wanted a story to help teach my students about odd and even numbers, so I found this on Amazon and thought it might work. But after reading it once during our math workshop mini lesson, my students begged me to read it again. They wanted to stop and count things as we read to determine if the number of items in the illustrations were even or odd. They were looking to make sure all things to do with "Odd Todd" were odd, and that "Even Steven" only surrounded himself with an even number of items. They even figured out the number patterns in the character's names without prompting from me!This book started a fascination with odd and even numbers in my classroom that has never been present in previous years. At the students' request, they wrote math stories making up their own "even" and "odd" characters, and made posters of Even Steven and Odd Todd. This story is really cute and teaches a social lesson along with a math concept- killing two birds with one stone. (At first, the two boys don't get along, but as the story progresses, they are forced by circumstances to work together. As a result, they see the value of each other's differences.)I would recommend this book to teachers and/or parents that want to teach children about odd and even numbers. It is short and it is not beautiful, but it really struck a chord with my first graders, and that makes it a hit in my book!

SON READS THIS EVERY NIGHT!!!!
This is a great book. We are a homeschooling family and try to look for clever books. This definitely fit the bill. We just happened to be learning to skip count. Also had just started talking about the concept of even vs odd numbers. My son has ADHD and just recently at 6 yrs old learned to read. This book was challenging enough for him to read, but doable. He announced there were 800 some odd words in it.The book opens with skip counting .. 2 fish..4 dogs..6 birds...something like that. Over and over there is math snuck in "I will make 4 pancakes...2 for now and 2 for later" My son had recently learned adding doubles in math so this was really cool for him to have the doubles in a fun application in a book...not just say a boring story problem or with the manipulatives. We have had this book about 3 weeks courtesy of the tooth fairy. My son has either set it out as a book we read to him at bedtime or he reads it to us. I would say just about every single night it is read by someone in the house to or by our son. I was not familiar with these books and will be looking for more.Enjoy!!

A fun math read aloud for students learning about even and odd numbers
I bought this book to read aloud to my second graders who were learning about even and odd numbers. It's a fun little story about two characters, Even Steven and Odd Todd. Even Steven is very meticulous and only likes things in even numbers but Odd Todd comes along messes up his orderly ways. My students enjoyed the story and it was a fun supplemental read aloud.

Concept-Rich and Too Cute.
My 4 1/2 year old and I love this book! We're starting pre-K this fall, and I've been looking for math-content books to enrich our daily reading practice. Like another reviewer said, the book isn't overtly focused on math concepts, but I think the idea that everything about Even Steven and Odd Todd is even and odd (respectively, of course) is really clever. My son loves the quirkiness of each character, and I'm thrilled that he's getting some knowledge base of the concepts he'll eventually learn in school.Incidentally, I purchased this book because it was listed as a resource at the back of "Missing Mittens" by Stuart J. Murphy. If you're looking for books based on mathematical concepts, Murphy's MathStart books are really nicely done. http://www.mathstart.net/

Cute Math Tale
This is a cute book about two cousins spending the summer together. As indicated, Even Stevens likes everything to be in even numbers while Odd Todd likes when things are in odd numbers. The two tend to get on each others nerves. This book is a fun book with numbers throughout. While I do understand the concept they are trying to bring out, this book is best understood by children who already know odd and even number. This is not a teaching book, but more of a fun math tale.Overall this book is cute. It reinforces the even and odd numbers through the caracters. As an added bonus, there are some activities toward the end of the book to further the fun.

Perfect for 2nd Graders
I read this before beginning our unit on even and odd numbers. The kids loved it and were very engaged with our discussions throughout the book! They made several connections to the characters Even Steven and Odd Todd throughout our unit!

Great practices for learning odd/even numbers
Even Steven only likes even numbered things and Odd Todd, odd things. Plenty of opportunity for children to spot odd/ even number of objects in the pictures, although those stay less than 12. We related the number of objects it to huge numbers and determined if they are odd/even too thus demonstrating the use of the ones digit. Children then made their own numbers for us to determine odd or even. This book is a great stimulus for mathematical discussion. My 6 year olds loved it, commenting and discussing Even Stevens rages and changes in demeanour over the course of the story. Hits PSHME/English too.

Grade 2 resource
I enjoyed this book and my more importantly my students enjoyed it as well. The story was believable and funny and I'm sure it was helpful for some of my students with respect to the idea of even and odd. Good price.

Wonderful for my pupils
As a trainee teacher I struggled for days wondering how to go about introducing odds and evens to a Year 1 class. Turns out this is the book to do it!The characters are enjoyable and catchy. Everything (literally EVERYTHING) seems to be connected to odd and even numbers, the characters names (just look at the number of letters in each one), the pictures, the cats that appear in the pictures, the text and it even includes a few suggestions for games at the end. There is so much you can take from this book to make odd and even lessons engaging and interesting.I even read it as a bit of home time reading for the children.Highly recommended!
