Painting Flowers on Rocks

As a novice rock painter, I found Lin Wellfords books to be very helpful. I appreciate her step by step approach to building up the layers which make these rocks look so realistic. I'm not sure if you didn't have experience as a painter already if you'd find this as useful as she had to make some assumptions one would know how to mix paint or work with it.As an aside, the first 6 rocks I painted, the primroses, were used at an outdoor market as paperweights. Many folks kept trying to buy them. I would not have achieved so good a result if I didn't have this book to guide me.

I'm so glad I found this book on Amazon. I purchased it for more than painting rocks: I have followed the instructions for painting blossoms, though not on rocks but on heretofore unpainted, wooden, kitchen cabinet knobs. The woodwork in my new kitchen and all through my house is an off-white, and I decided to paint the cabinet knobs in a variety of bright colors and then painted a single blossom on each knob. For this project I used acrylics that can be found in any crafts store.For painting on rocks, which is my next project, I purchased the recommended DecoArt Patio paints. They are the paints used by the author of this book. I found a few of the small containers of this paint on Amazon.com and a huge variety of colors of the paints on an online Web site that I Googled to find and which begins with an H.I shall also paint tall flowers, such as tulips and daffodils, on large, broken pieces of my old clay pots. After painting them, I shall stick the bottoms securely into the soil in my garden and let the flowers "stand tall." Thanks to this great book, I am looking forward to a painterly summer and perhaps making some rocky Christmas gifts for family and friends.P.S. Added on July 11, 2012: I am using the white charcoal pencils for sketching out the blossoms and leaves. Because the rocks and stones scrape off so much of the charcoal from the pencils, I have ordered a dozen of the white, and they ARE much cheaper by the DOZEN from my art supplier online. The packaging for the white charcoal pencils advised that their white marks can be erased with white vinyl erasers. At my nearest "big-box" store I found white vinyl erasers in packages of ten white vinyl eraser caps for the eraser end of the white pencils. They work beautifully, because the charcoal pencils do not have erasers caps on them normally.

This book makes it so easy to paint beautiful flowers on rocks that look so realistic.I have had huge fun using this book to paint lovely flowers and leaves in all colors - some appearing to be in pots or baskets, some just appearing to be growing naturally.I've sold quite a few of my rock paintings, given away some as gifts, and others I have put on my dad's grave so that he will have beautiful everlasting flowers all year round. I have one on my desk at work as a paper weight which always gets many compliments as it is so unusual and use others as really attractive door stoppers.Go ahead and have mega-fun using this book for inspiration, so much the better if you can pick up your own rocks from places that have sentimental meaning to you too.Using this book I have taught friends aging 8 - 60 to do rock paintings - they have had so much fun and were amazed by how simple it is to do when you know how - even if you have never painted before!

I cannot draw or paint at all but when a friend showed me this book & I read the simple instructions I had to give it a try. These books are so much fun! I like the one of houses the best & have painted one season on one side & another on the other. It doesn't matter if it looks like a 6 year old did it, that just adds to the charm. It makes you look at rocks in a whole new light & it is fun to see what you can see in them. I've done some flowers & they have turned out pretty well, too. I have the animal book but haven't tired any yet. They might be beyond my skill level but the intructions there are easy to follow so I am going to give them a try & may even surprise myself. I have some friends who do paint & have done them & they are just the cutest things. I'd say the flowers & the houses are for beginners I bet you will be thrilled with how they turn out & amazed at how crazy you will go with your imagination! You'll never just pass by a rock again!

I haven't been able to do much painting since I received my book. However, I read it cover to cover and find it gives all sorts of information I will be able to use. I am a beginner on painting rocks. Still collecting my materials. And looking forward to when I can start the actual painting. It won't stop me from painting what is in the book, however, my background in flowers comes from living in Michigan, Tennessee and now Florida. The flowers this author used seem to be from Arizona. I guess I have a few more kinds of flowers to learn about. Nicely written.

This is another great rock painting book by Lin Wellford! I painted a bouquet of tulips and sent it with my neighbor to the hospital for a friend who was sick and she loved it. I have enjoyed painting these flower rock assortments very much and they truly brighten up your home like real flowers, with less work! Lin's instruction is clear enough that anyone can make the projects she teaches. These books are classics and I bought all of her rock painting books and treasure them all. She has a wonderful eye and the patterns and instructions in this book will yield fabulous results if followed! I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a new hobby!

Lin Wellford is the master of rock painting, her instructions, photographs, and ideas can't be beat.

I am new at rock painting and my instructor has the book and I love it. Easy to follow and I did by the used version. It was just fine. It looked new.

I like Lin's style & have tried a couple of the ideas myself. Well presented & informative.

Lovely book and very inspiring. Plenty of pictures to make you want to have a go at painting your own river pebbles. I also bought others in this series and love them all.

This is a really great book. Step by step guide with beautiful illustration throughout. Makes you want to start painting rocks straight away.

a reasonably clear and concise guide

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BOOK. SO EASY TO FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS WHICH ARE CLEAR AND PRECISE.AT THE START IT WON'T LOOK LIKE LIN'S BUT GET YOURSELF A SCRIBBLER WITH BLANK PAGES AND PRACTISE THE STROKES BEFORE YOU START ON THE ROCK. ITS A WONDERFUL WINTER HOBBY AND LETS FACE IT, ROCKS ARE PRETTY CHEAP AND YOU CAN TURN THEM INTO SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL.

I like this book. I also got Let's Rock and Painting Houses, cottages and Towns on Rocks.The instructions are detailed and easy to understand. I liked the idea of paitning not just flowers but flowers with the pot - which could decorate a place even inside the house. I would definitely recommend this book.

This was the second rock painting book I purchased. I love gardening and wanted to bring some of my outdoor garden look, into my home. The examples and detailed instructions will allow any one who enjoys painting to replicate a garden look on to a rock. They also make great personal teacher's gifts.
