Good general info book
I am thinking of a self build. This book gives the basics and covers a lot of ground from initial design right through to finishing. It looks at green issues from insulation to recycling. It is not the only book you will need as this subject could not possibly fit into one book, but it helps you decide what areas you want to look into further yourself and what areas you will ask for help from experts on. Lots of photos (some a little dated) and info for UK self builders.

Valid principles, outdated processes/materials
This is great book if you are looking for guidance on decision making process. Not so much if you are after practical guide how to do things.Principles are valid today as they were in time of writing. Especially planning and decision making. Materials and processes are outdated and not described in detail.

Still green on "The Green Self-Build Book"
I brought this book as a present for my father,as he is very keep on the idea of possibly making it his last project before finally hanging up his tools...yeah,right!..He's been known to go out for an evening meal with a tape measure in his pocket and a pencil behind his ear!.(honestly).Anyway,back to the book,As he's only had the chance to have a quick flick through the book and has hardly started reading it,I can only go by what he has caught his eye so far,but he seems fairly impressed by it's features & contents. But until I get a chance to have a read through myself,I can only give it 4stars,so watch this space, when I can give you my honest opinion..

Out of date
If I had picked this book up in a bookshop, I would have skimmed a few pages before noticing that it was seriously out of date, missing a lot of modern thinking and techniques, while still touting a few very old health scares (the risks of electromagnetic waves from power cables was a big scare in the mid-90's. Get your aluminium hat on, quick.) In a bookshop, I would have put it back on the shelf. With Amazon, I have put it back in the box for a return.
