The Native Trees of Canada

If you don't know Shapton, start with anything. She is so witty, so delightful an artist, such an eccentric (in a good way).These are just leaves and branches, painted in gouache. Sound dull? Guess again.

Something about the paintings bleeding off the page and the painted titles of the trees/ leaves / fruit is stylistically complex, simple, and pleasing.

This book is a work of art. I recommend it to anyone with a keen interest in trees and nature, or art and design. It is very refreshing to see these types of books.

A fun look-through, but no great artwork. Color harmonies are nice. Great if you are a botanist or going on a leaf-walk.

lovely pictures, beautiful colours

Her paintings are beautiful. The colours are perfect (muted and lush) as are the abstract take on the leaves and branches and buds. I bought one at an art gallery then came home and ordered 3 more for gifts. Gorgeous and inspiring!! And I also bought the postcard book.

The Native Trees of Canada is a hand painted exercise that has little or no value as a reference book. The pastel water colours do not represent the true colours of what are purported to be leaves nor do they represent the proper shapes . The book may have some value to the parent or grand parent of the child that drew them.
