I’ve read it 3 times over the years!
One of my favorite books. I read it over 30 years ago. And I’ve read it two times cents. I just bought another copy for my sister and she loved it also!

a book I couldn't forget
I first read NO PROMISES IN THE WIND in the late seventies when I was appoximately the same age as the main character, Josh. This was the first book I read that spoke to my heart, and I've never forgotten that I enjoyed it. I recently reread it as an adult to see how I felt about it, and I was extremely pleased. Ms. Hunt creates a stark picture of the Great Depression and focuses on Josh's need to tackle the world on his own. The economic hardships have caused Josh's parents to sour and make Josh feel burdensome. Josh discovers how truly difficult the times are through many trying encounters, but he also finds new friends who ultimately teach him that his parents are imperfect. Through striking out on his own Josh matures and learns to feel love again.

Depression era book.
I gave this book to my 13-year-old son because that is the age that I was given this book by my English teacher and it helped me to understand my dad who was a very hard man and very hard working man.

A good read
This was a required summer reading book for my middle school student. I decided to read it so I could answer any questions he had about the story. I think that for a middle school student it was a good read and brought to light the difficulties that families went through during the 1930's. While reading the book my son has asked questions about the time and is seeing how hardships can affect how people behave. A good read for a young adult.

Important historical period
Excellent coming-of-age story set in the Great Depression. Two brothers leave home because their family has too little food, and they use their skills to survive. Middle school, for boys or girls.

and I loved it so much
this is a book I had as a kid, and I loved it so much, I got it back.although I do understand this is a used book, I was disappointed to see the book had been written and scribbled all over.fortunately, the scribble isn't over any words in the book, it's readable. I'm thinking of taking to it a book restorer here in town to see if the writing can be removed. (it's in pen of course)

Great!!!
I love Irene Hunt's stories! I'm usually not a fan of fiction, but her characters come to life and she sets her stories in the realm of reality, in this case the great depression of the 1930s. A good, interesting look at how life at that time affected the average American.
