The obverse features the rugged image of a mid-nineteenth century gold prospector standing in a rocky valley. Holding a pickaxe and his trusty gold pan, a faithful mule stands to the right. Each round is inscribed with Prospector. The reverse features a sextant - a navigation tool used to measure angular distances and altitudes - along with a compass, both placed atop a map on a wooden surface. To the right, a small portion of rope can be seen.
