Rick Steves Portugal Review: Portugal Guide book - Very useful and comprehensive Review: Invaluable - even two years old - worth every Euro/Dollar! - This was the latest book Rick Steves had out in May 2021 and it was wonderfully useful if only a tiny bit dated due to the pandemic (written in 2019?). Adding a 10 percent increase to restaurants and museums brings it up to date. A great bonus is the associated free walking tours he offers. For tips on how to get around and trip planning, this guide book is essential. Rick Steve's and his company strive to give back for the increased environmental toll that tourism causes. The most comprehensive and helpful guide book I’ve ever purchased
This was an excellent guide which we used every day on our two week trip to Portugal. His recommendations for sites, touring different cities, restaurants and hotels were helpful. We ate at three restaurants which he recommended and stayed at two hotels. They were really nice places. Took city tours that he put together and found his guidebook to be exceptional. I intend to purchase his other guides in the future when I travel abroad

A good introductory guide, but also lacking in some areas
Having lived in Portugal 30 years ago (before the age of RS guidebooks) I was anxious to see what this book had to offer. It follows the same recipe as all of his books: A rushed 2 week itinerary, good basic information on the biggest sites, and helpful information on transportation options. But it lacks any information on Madeira and the Azores. I wish the walking tours maps had a bit more detail in the form of more street names. For me, it's easy to get lost. Keep in mind that even a 'current' book goes to press well before the date on the cover, so check his website for updates, TripAdvisor for reviews, and verify hours and costs of restaurants and lodging. I wish he'd dump his $ rating for restaurants and accommodations. Almost everything is higher; in some cases nearly double. Sometimes I wonder if he gets kickbacks from hoteliers and restaurants. I've pretty much given up on his recommendations for restaurants and hotels. At least in the Balkans and London, I haven't found them to be reliable. Combine this book with the Lonely Planet version for the best overall look at your options.

Guided walks are the best!
Best travel guide I have ever used! We found so many “hidden gems” using the guided walks in the book. Other people were passing right by many of these great stops, but we got to enjoy the areas thoroughly (and without crowds!) because of Rick’s helpful tips. I will ALWAYS bring a Rick Steve’s book with me to any other European city or country I visit!

A real help to explore on your own
A great help. We went to Portugal in February. In Evora we used this book as a guide to see sights because we like to see things on our own time. Walking tours were not available every day during off season anyway. This book guided and explained what we saw. Having the book was useful in Lisbon giving us good history about sights. We also saved 1o euro on a walking tour ( recommended in the book) because we had the book making it almost free.

Great Buy
This book is in very good condition. There are no markings, there is even a map. I am sure this book will give me some insight to Portugal before I decide to go which I plan on doing.

Yes, it's not perfect
When I went to Portugal, I had never been there and never had any ambition to go. Thanks to my daughter that changed. After reading Rick Steves book I touched down in Lisbon with enough knowledge to navigate around town and out to some of the shore points. I left Portugal feeling I did not miss anything and I did not even use any of the suggested tour guides. You do not even have to follow the suggested itineraries, plan your own take your time city by city. This book is worth the price for your first time visit to Portugal.

Updates previous versions. An excellent resource if you are travelling to Portugal and well worth the price. Steves does not cover every town but does a great job of the main cities plus selected towns that are less touristy, which most other authors miss. With a good sense of humor and expertise, Steves guides you through the areas of most interest and tells you what areas are probably not worthy of your time. A great resource that puts the emphasis on local travel, local cuisine and local customs on a budget.

Rick Steves always finds the things that I like to do ... not always the most important and expensive attractions. Good "backdoor" finds and cities; often points out the 'too touristy" areas. Always good town walks.

Another great book by Rick Steve's. Thoroughly enjoy the advice and suggestions in this book. I like that it's not a heavy huge book. Makes it way easier to travel with.

I like Rick Steeve's travel materials. He only recommends places he has been to and checked out himself. Good info, good maps, good details. Use in conjunction with his travel videos on his website or You Tube.
