Good low cost solution for salvaged 18650 cells, nice flashlight but read on
This is an extremely bright flashlight. It has a nice quality feel for this price range. It will fit in a pocket and fits nicely in the hand. The lanyard on it is a nice touch. A belt clip would be nicer. The power button is on the back. The swith does not look like the cheap 1 AA cell flashlight that cost around $3.25 and are a top seller on Amazon. Those are junk -- the on/off switch is cheaply made and invariably falls out when you change batteries, after a time. This is a much better quality unit in terms of mechanical design and because it uses an 18650 rechargeable lithium ion cell. These are commonly used in most laptop computer battery backs, often six or eight of them soldered together. They are sold on Amazon.I don't hand out 5 star reviews. I paid my own good money for this not Amazon Vine freebie review that rates everything 5 stars. If this flashlight was worth 3 times what I paid for it I would rate it 5 stars. However it is well worth the fourteen dollars. If I bought a hundred dollar Nitecore I bet it would blow this thing away -- that would be 5 star flashlight. But for the money this is a good deal. I would easily expect 3 years out of it of frequent use. Or as a backup unit in the truck or on the job site. The 1 year warranty is a big plus in this price range. But, you get what you pay for. I am using 18650 cells salvaged from laptop battery packs. They are all top brands: Sanyo and Panasonic and some are LG. These are UNPROTECTED cells so you have to know what you are doing. Safely removing from salvaged/recycled packs takes some safety skills. Unprotected cells do not have overvoltage/undervoltage protection either. You need to use a high quality highly accurate multimeter. I use a Brymen 867s they are $180 on e**y. Need a highly accurate DC multimeter with Crest and Min/Max functions. Mine measure 50,000 counts or 500,000 counts. A "bad" battery pack usually has 1 bad cell and 5 perfectly good cells. Sometimes all 6 are perfectly good and brand new because somebody got a new laptop and recycled fairly new battery packs. But you need good equipment to load test the bad cells -- when in doubt, throw it out.Unprotected do last longer than protected cells and cost me nothing. Never let the voltage drop to below 3.25 volts and you will be fine. I use a Nitecore D4 digicharger that is made to handle unprotected 18650 cells as well as many other rechargeables... do not scrimp on a charger. This is one of the best chargers on the market. It handles 4 at a time. NiteCore-D4+CAR-Adapter+BBOX-T Bundle Nitecore D4 Charger Integrated LCD Panel Display for Li-Ion Ni-MH Ni-Cd Batteries with EASTSHINE Car Adapter and EASTSHINE Battery Box it knows how to charge very low unprotected cells and top them off to full capacity safely. If you let an unprotected 18650 run down too low it kills the battery and trying to force current into it by using a dumb recharger is not too safe.Note: PROTECTED 18650 cells are the safest way for most people - they are protected for a reason. Disclaimer: Using unprotected cells is not for noobs. Your mileage may vary. There are a lot of good, protected cells in the $15-$20 range each for a protected 18650 -- most people should use them. I highly recommend storing 18650 cells in a battery box (like comes with the Nitecore D4 charger) or else put them into small, individual baggies for storage. I have 10 of these fully charged. An 18650 battery is not like a rechargeable NiMH battery. Those lose their charge even when not in use and lost battery power just sitting in your drawer. The 18650 is not like that: They hold onto a charge for years. This is a big reason to buy this flashlight. The power cells are superior to 3-AAA cells in every way. This flashlight comes with a plastic sleeve in the box. Remove the battery pack that takes the 3 AAA cells and put it back in the carton. Place one 18650 battery in the plastic sleeve and use that as the battery. It lasts much longer than 3 AAA cells and is also brighter, and the brightness lasts for much longer. This Refun flashligh casts a very bright, wide and round beam of light a long distance. I do not know if it is 600 lumens or not but it is extremely bright. Don't look into the beam of light.I do recommend this unit for a low cost approach to extremely bright 18650 powered flashlight.

Very bright, compact, and solid.
I wanted something small but powerful that I could tuck in my bag/glovebox/pocket, but I also didn't want to pay a fortune for a "tactical" flashlight. I kept seeing people raving about little flashlights that use CREE LEDs. I was a bit skeptical when ordering because some of these small flashlights seemed too cheap to be that good, and I'd never heard of this company.I was not disappointed. This thing is BRIGHT, evenly lights a wide area when not zoomed (no darker "rings" or brighter center in it), and has a very study metal body, and a glass (maybe polycarbonate) lens to magnify the beam, not a flat piece of plastic. When the back end is unscrewed, a rubber O-ring is visible--this helps keep out moisture. The day-glo rubber cover on the button does not glow in the dark (bummer--that would have been a nice touch). To zoom/focus the beam, you slide the head of the flashlight forward and back. I like the feel of it. It's not loose or slippery and has some resistance to it, but you don't have to force it. One of the peculiarities of these CREEs is that when the beam is at its smallest, it's square--you can make out the circuit. If you get the multi-mode model, it turns on in "high" mode. To cycle through the modes, turn the light off and on quickly. It will drop to "medium," then to "low," then strobe, then Morse code for SOS, then back to "high." If left off for a while (I haven't timed it--30 seconds? A minute?) it should come on in "high" mode again regardless of the setting when you stopped. The Refun can use either 3 AAA batteries you load into a carrier or a single special lithium battery (it looks kind of like an AA, but isn't). The lithium battery needs to be put in a plastic sleeve that comes with the light. Some people swear by the lithium batteries, but I get plenty of light from the AAAs, and would rather stick with a type I can find in any store and not have to carry around both battery carriers in case I can't recharge.Do not mistake this for the little aluminum 9-LED mini flashlights you see everywhere. It's so much better! I am probably going to buy another so I can keep one in my car full-time.Cons: The multi-mode thing can get a little annoying if for some reason you need to turn the light on and off multiple times, but not not long enough for it to reset to "high." Also, I've had an oddly hard time finding a flashlight holster that is not too short or too thin and has flap to protect the lens. I am using a Trailite TL-NH101, which is acceptable, but the fit is tight and I can easily pull the Refun's head up before the rest of it comes out. Probably not good for the thing long-term. I have to either push through the hole at the bottom, or leave the wrist strap dangling out the top and pull on that (which works better). The Refun is a "T6"-style light, one of several CREE LED-based models. There are many other flashlights for sale that seem similar if not identical to this one, but I can't say whether they all perform in the same way. Different companies may offer slightly different options, such as colored lights, no multiple modes, UV, with or without lithium batteries and a charger, etc.
