Amazing grass... Not mixed with weed seeds
08.15.20Did no preparation work. Large bare areas and large areas of weeds mixed with bare ground. These are areas cleared out from being heavily wooded and have not grown any type of previously laid grass in 7 years.I just spread the seed moderately, not heavily, and covered as much as possible with straw (I hope it doesn't storm tonight, I will finish spreading the straw in the morning)I didn't water.I intend to update this review regularly, because I will use no other grass seed and I too have experienced spending a great deal of money on this seed and had seemingly no results. That is... Until I had results. I can only speak for my own horrible experiences. All were errors on my part... jsPrior to today's sowing, I had spread this in a large, bare/mossy/fungusy (if that's a word) area in dense shade. At the same time, I sowed a large bare to mostly bare area with several different stages of sun exposure.I did no preparation work. I did not cover with straw. I watered daily.Nothing. 6 days... Still nothing. 12 days... Still nothing. Still watering daily. 14 days... Something. Thank you Lord! I had like 7 teeny little thin little grasslings. Score for the dense shade area! 0- Any other area.Every day greatly multiplied the grass in the dense shade. One month in and that area is looking amazing. I cut the grass... Well... OopsLittle too soon for that. Now I just have sporadic little squiggly grass blades laying flat on the ground in some horrible blade of grass fetal positions...Still nothing in the other areas... Still watering daily.2 months in. Days of storms that brought down much leaf litter and whatever else litters out of trees.Obviously with no grass it was too muddy and damp (for days) to remove the mess from... the other mess or ground as some call it.And then suddenly there was grass everywhere in all of those other places!I concurred that it had to be all of the storm left overs helping to hold the moisture in the ground... Thus germination began in great abundance!Except that it tended to grow as it flowed in the rain... So I have a beautifully streaked ground of many grassy rivers!I have since over seeded and it is blending nicely. Seeds came up evenly within only a few days. I credit this to having covered it with straw!!3 months... Looks amazing, still have not mowed. No fertilizer. No Peat Moss. As it has grown, I do carefully remove tree litter as it quickly begins to yellow the grass. Honestly is not a burden, I just walk through and pick up a leaf or twig or all out branch, regularly, not even daily. As it is growing, I find it much easier to spot and pull weeds, which I also do not make a chore of.Still watering nearly daily due to the mixed age of the grass. Once it has all established nicely, I can slow on the watering I'm sure.

Very good growth. Fast and healthy.
In this photo you’ll see two things. One is about $20 worth of seed from the bag which is still mostly full. The other side you’ll see $800 worth of Meyer Zoysia (some is behind the fence also).I planted the seed in an area that doesn’t receive much sun so I knew it wouldn’t take the zoysia as well.Let’s just say I’m a bit surprised that after two weeks I have this lush of grass from seed that wasn’t even covered (literally spread it and forgot it) vs the sod which still hasn’t taken despite doing amendments to soil etc.So I’d say I’d recommend it.

Very dark green grass
Very dark green and thick. Be advised, this is not a " no til" seed. Needs to be covered.

Great Grass Seed
This Pennington grass seed is pricey compared to other products, but it's worth it, especially if you mix it with the less-expensive seed. I learned this trick from watching my landscaper re-seed my lawn after the sprinkler system was installed, and I have found this combination to work very well.

Maybe you will have better results.
I reseeded or over seeded in parts of my grass. It started growing approx 12 days after planting. I covered the seeds but it appears that not all of the seeds germinated. Knowing the amount of seeds I put down, maybe 90% germinated. Mixed in with the grass appeared to be three leaf clovers growing.I seeded in early fall. I seeded three weeks before I provided this review so cannot review for long term.

Pennington Smart Seed Sun and Shade Grass Seed,
Works great for us. We put the seed down very thick, cover it with non weed and feed grass clippings, water every late evening when the sun isn't its hottest. We didn't mow it until it was almost laying over. Mowed to so it was 3 inches above the ground. We were having troubles with our well going dry so we had to stop watering. It turned brownish but when it did rain, it turned green again.

DO NOT BUY IT UNLESS YOU HAVE FULL SHADE
Sun & Shade? More like just shade. It’s been three weeks since it’s been down. Before putting it down I trimmed the previous Bermuda down to nubs. I put on a fresh layer of deodorized manure and top soil mix. I watered it. I lovingly placed the seed using a seed spreader. I’ve kept it wet, watering 3-4 times per day. Haven’t walked on it at all.About a 1 foot by 6 inch strip grew where there is 100% shade all day long. You know what else grew? Weeds. Scraggly bits of the previous years Bermuda grass. BUT NOT THIS SEED!! I am so disappointed and angry at the wasted money. How do I get my money back when I can’t possibly return the seed?

It Works!
Grass seed is always a challenge. Especially in the Florida sun. The key here is to follow the instructions - the most important being to keep the seed moist. Early morning and early evening watering at first. If you can supplement with hand watering, so much the better - especially in full sun areas. Be patient. I'm three weeks out and mine has sprouted all over from full sun to full shade. I really had to see it to believe it. Nice job Pennington.
