Weber 6492 Original Instant-Read Thermometer

I purchased the Weber 6492 in the middle of August 2014 and it has worked well up to this week when, as others have reported, the temperature reading starting jumping around and occasionally settled on a non-reading of "LL". I am not hard on my things because I want them to last. I treated this thermometer, in particular, as if it was as fragile as an egg. But four days before Christmas, with baking still to be done, it stopped functioning properly.I didn't have the time or inclination to go out and buy another thermometer so I figured it was worth trying to change the battery, The battery is accessible by twisting the front part of the housing (the part with the buttons and LCD) counterclockwise in relation to the back.As it turned out, the battery was fine but the contacts must have had a little oxidation that prevented the front part from communicating with the sensor. After gently cleaning the contacts with a soft piece of fabric, It works fine now.

What I like the most about this one is that the display can rotate so that I can easily read it regardless of the angle of the probe. I decided to make a video review just to show how nice it is.

I own several other thermometers, both mechanical and digital. This thermometer reads with the same accuracy of the others in half the time.The pivoting head is definitely a bonus.Recommended!

Works great until you get it slightly wet and then it gets all wonky and only works some of the time or just changes from Fahrenheit to Celcius randomly. I have two of these (I had to buy a second one to replace the first one which got wet). I love them when they are still new but unless you are super careful washing them, the water ruins the readout mechanism. Bummer because we obviously have to wash the thermometer that has touched undercooked meat, but yet we aren't supposed to get the LED portion wet. Not easy to do. How do you wash off bacteria without splashing the meter part. I wish the meter was more waterproof! It would get 5 stars if it were waterproof.

I ordered a second one of these, only for my husband to take with him while leaving for a year. I hope this one lasts as well as our first. That thing has been through it all. We've used it for years and apparently the battery lasts close to forever. It's probably been a year ago now, it went missing. We couldn't find it anywhere. I figured one of our boys had gone off with it. My husband loves to grill out back. This thermometer, our first one, was "lost" when it fell off the deck and stayed there, in the dirt, probably some of one fall, all winter, maybe even most of spring and summer of the next year - AND STILL WORKED. It was exposed to at least extreme low temperatures, snow, and ice, maybe extreme high temperatures the next summer, plus rain, all of it. I was amazed it turned on when I found it after so long. A few specifics: I love that the head tilts back and forth, it can change from Fahrenheit to Celsius, and has an actual power button.

Update: My second one to replace the one below does indeed have a ratcheting head and hold it's position. I'm going to leave it at 4 stars, because the first one was defective in that regard. But, I did not hesitate to order it again, it's priced well, it gives an accurate temp reading and the floppy head was not a detraction from reordering it.Works just fine as long as you don't get sidetracked and shove your turkey back in the oven without removing it. 20 minutes in a convection oven set at 325 and I caught the thermometer right before the melted top dropped off into the turkey drippings. Needless to say, it's not heat resistant! :) Other than that, I had no problems with it quickly and accurately giving me a temp reading. (tested it with boiling water to start) the swivel head is nice, the only thing with that is that it's floppy. I wasn't expecting that. I expected that maybe it would ratchet up and down, but it basically just flops over and you lift it to read it. That's why it gets 4 stars, it would be nice if you could adjust it to a certain degree and leave it there. But, what do I want for 10 bucks? I'd buy it again, because that's what I just did - bought it again. One Click...it'll be here on Friday.

Don't know why I never bought one of these sooner! No more guessing when the meat is done, no more cutting it to see if it is done. Just insert the thermometer to test if the meat is the desired temperature, for example chicken should be cooked until it is 165 degrees. Just Google Temperature Guide and you will find the correct temperature for all meats. The thermometer takes a couple seconds to settle at the exact temperature. Instant would have earned a 5 star review.Glancing at other reviews I noticed a lot of people complaining that their thermometer display started malfunctioning and sometimes displayed LL. They go on to say that they are disappointed and have to buy a new thermometer. Why? Like any other battery operated device you eventually have to replace the battery! It is a very simple task and inexpensive. The battery type is LR44 and after turning the face of the thermometer counter-clockwise you slip out the old battery and slip in the new one. The batteries are sold here on Amazon, I priced them at 2 for $1.99. A lot cheaper than a new thermometer.I have included a photo from the user manual to illustrate opening the battery compartment and it also states the battery type as already mentioned here.

Very good product to check the temperature of meat. The slim probe easily slides into any meat.Good price.Nice one

So, 15 months and it’s only showing Fahrenheit... Of course just out of warranty...

This is my third Thermometer. NOTHING WRONG WITH IT. DO NOT IMMERSE IN WATER.Someone in the family keeps drowning them. Cannot do without it love it.

Great item, used every time when cooking meat. BBQ food tastes much better when you don't have to burn it just to be sure it's cooked!!

A very useful item for anyone who wants to enjoy barbecuing meat safely. A small cost for a good quality item that gives you and your family / guests piece of mind.
